Fix The CTA

Come out to talk to fellow transit riders and get them to sign on in support of transit workers as part of our Fix the CTA priority campaign. Never canvassed before? No problem! We'll be both tabling and talking to people on the street and we'll give you a quick rundown on how to do both. This is a great way to get involved with Fix the CTA if you've been meaning to!
Chicago DSA - Fix The CTA
What is the problem?
Mismanagement by the CTA Board has made Chicago Public Transit unreliable for riders and unsustainable for workers.
What do we want?
Reliable public transit!
A return to 2-person crews on every train
Better train and bus frequency than pre-pandemic
Worker Solidarity
Transit workers deserve well-paying, safe, dignified jobs with room for growth. The city must eliminate tiered hiring, create more full-time jobs, and offer more paths to jobs by expanding second-chance programs. Workers should have a say in CTA operations (including control over route picks and run schedules).
Rider Experience
Riders and workers alike want regular, clean, safe service. The city should support an efficient transit system with infrastructural improvements including priority light changes for buses at intersections, bus only lanes, and stations and vehicles that are 100% accessible.
Equity in Service
We need to expand bus and train service lines on the south and west sides, connecting with Metra and Pace to give service to Cook County suburbs and beyond. We want to see no-fare lines as a first step toward doing away with fares entirely. Transit is a public good, not a business, and should be offered as such! We also need greater accessibility for disabled residents across the city and at stations.
Environmentally-Conscious Development
Let’s explore electrification of buses and move away from fossil fuels ethically. The city can incentivize use of public transit over individual car use through providing more pedestrian and biking safety infrastructure and bus-only lanes.
CTA Leadership Accountability
We demand greater transparency from CTA leadership, open accounting books, timely response to FOIA requests, clear and honest communication about problems, and an end to obfuscation and obfuscating language about cuts/reductions. Leaders should publicly give information at city council meetings other public meetings.
How do we get there?
CTA’s Collective Bargaining Agreement with ATU Locals 241 (Bus Operators) and 308 (Rail Operators) expires on December 31, 2023. To have the staffing needed for reliable public transit, the CTA needs to be attractive to new employees and retain the current employees!
We support ATU members in their fight for the job conditions and compensation they deserve.
The CTA Board needs to listen to ATU workers – the CTA goes nowhere without them!
We need a mass movement of riders and workers to force the CTA board to preserve and expand our public transit. By organizing our families, neighbors, co-workers, and friends to support Chicago ATU members in their contract campaign we can help them win what they need to keep our city moving.
