DSA San Diego Food Sovereignty Campaign

Food sovereignty is an idea that was first articulated by La Via Campesina movement as “the right of peoples to healthy and culturally appropriate food produced through ecologically sound and sustainable methods, and their right to define their own food and agriculture systems.” Our current food system, both nationally and locally in San Diego, falls woefully short of this ideal. Food is largely produced by corporations using fossil fuel intensive methods that exploit labor and Mother Earth. Despite these intensive methods, too many of our people are still going hungry, and many more lack access to healthy, locally grown food.

11% of all San Diegans and 16% of San Diego’s children experience food insecurity. The cost of food has increased year-over-year due to post-pandemic price gouging and the H5N1 bird flu and subsequent impacts on the food system will exacerbate this issue in the short-term. In the long term, global warming is impacting the ability of monoculture crop systems to deliver the food and nutrition we need to survive. Our communities deserve access to fresh, safe food that is delivered outside of the tyranny of the capitalist market. Our planet deserves a method of planting which reinvigorates the soil, increases biodiversity, and stands up to the changing climate - and these practices can be taught and multiplied across the City of San Diego.

DSA San Diego's Food Sovereignty campaign seeks to sow the seeds of a better food system focused on meeting the community's needs. We are collaborating with local farmers and community members to build up community gardens, share knowledge and experience, educate the public, and connect with our neighbors.

Join us for an upcoming garden work day to get involved with the campaign!

We have 2 recurring garden work days:
  1. Peace Resource Center Garden - 1st Saturday of the month
  2. College Area Community Garden - 4th Saturday of the month
