Kevin Chavis for Hennepin County Commissioner District 3

Hi, I'm Kevin.

I’m a lifelong Minnesotan shaped by a family tradition of public service. Born in Coon Rapids to a working-class family, I carry with me the values our communities are built on: solidarity, fairness, and the belief that we all do better when we take care of one another. I served in the Minnesota Army National Guard and deployed to Iraq, where I oversaw key communications work in Battalion Operations and earned a rare promotion during deployment. That experience strengthened my commitment to service and to building a Minnesota where everyone can thrive.

As a union steward with SEIU Local 26 and later an organizer with AFSCME Local 34, I’ve helped hardworking Minnesotans win better wages and working conditions, recover stolen pay, and hold employers accountable. I’ve proudly served on the boards of Local 26, Local 34, and the SEIU State Council.

I’ve worked alongside Minnesotans to win real change—from helping turn the tide for marriage equality during the Vote No campaign, to standing with homeowners facing foreclosure, to supporting immigrant families seeking dignity and stability.

For the past eight years, I’ve served at Hennepin County, where my role is to help people in treatment for substance use disorder to access healthcare and housing. I see every day how effective, compassionate government can change lives—and I’m committed to making sure our systems work for everyone.
