NYC DSA invites DSA members and the broader NYC community to apply to participate in a pilot series of courses on 1) fascism and 2) imperialism.

Modeled on political education endeavors such as the Communist Party's Jefferson School and the Socialist Party's Rand School, the NYC DSA Academy for Socialist Education pilot aims to supplement ongoing NYC DSA education with more academically rigorous offerings taught by academics and scholars in the field.

Project Description

Political education has long been a vital part of the socialist project. The NYC DSA Academy for Socialist Education will offer rigorous, accessible courses taught by distinguished scholars and thinkers on the history and theory of socialist struggles and an analysis of the longstanding structures of capitalist society. We aim both to enrich the internal life of our DSA chapter and to become a hegemonic force in the political culture of the city.

Beginning this Fall 2024, the Academy will present its first two courses, one on fascism followed by one on imperialism. Distinguished intellectuals Victoria de Grazia and Molly Nolan will co-teach the former, and renowned scholars Nikhil Singh and Steven Hahn will team up to teach the latter. Future courses are already in the works, including a history of America’s ruling classes, an anatomy of strikes past and present, and a course on climate change and capitalism. Please note: These are 4-session courses held every other Monday. Due to space considerations, course size is limited and an application is required. Applicants should be committed to fully participate in classes (attending sessions, doing readings). A small fee will go toward paying for the space (sliding scale $20-$30/DSA members; $30-$40/non DSA members).
