Democratic Socialists of America is campaigning NO on Issue 1 in Ohio. Chapters across the state are launching campaigns to reach voters before a special August election on August 8. Issue 1 was conjured up by Ohio’s GOP legislature to make citizen-led amendments to the state constitution nearly impossible, timed before a November ballot measure to protect abortion. Ohio coalitions have submitted more than 700,000 signatures in support of placing The Right to Reproductive Freedom with Protections for Health and Safety on the November ballot - a couple hundred thousand more than what's needed to qualify under the current state constitution. Issue 1 would amend the constitution to require a 5% of signature from eligible voters in every Ohio county, and a 60% minimum to pass. Along with abortion rights, many issues crucial to Ohio's working class would be closed off for democratic consideration.
