Amidst longest-ever government shutdown, By The People launches #PledgeToImpeach

Starting with Judiciary Chairman Rep. Jerry Nadler, By The People launches mass movement demanding impeachment of the Trump Administration, targeting Congress to do their job

Manhattan, NY -- As part of the national campaign By The People, a movement to build public support around impeachment of the Trump Administration, rallied at New York Representative Jerry Nadler’s office today. Kicking-off by targeting Rep. Nadler, the new Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, organizers are launching the #PledgeToImpeach to calls upon members of Congress to impeach Trump if he’s shown to have violated the law or the constitution.

“As head of the House Judiciary Committee, we’re calling on Representative Nadler to do his job and sign the #PledgeToImpeach,” said Sophie Lasoff with ByThePeople. “While Donald Trump breaks the law and violates our rights, we need Congress to defend the American people. Rep. Nadler has already said he’ll support impeachment if there are crimes. Now, it’s time for him to stand up for all of us and represent the best interests of the people.”

As the federal government shutdown enters its 34th day, making this the longest shutdown in recent history, millions of people across America are bearing the costs of the Trump Administration’s dangerous neglect. Now, ordinary people are ramping up the call for elected officials to do their jobs and protect our democracy.

“Amidst the most devastating government shutdown in recent history, it’s up to all of us to make sure our representatives do their jobs and actually represent us. We’re calling on Congress to heed the calls of the people and commit to impeaching Trump to defend the constitution and the American people,” Nadler constituent Hannah Temkin said. “If we wait for the Mueller investigation to close to get these kinds of commitments, it will be too late.”

Over the coming weeks, By The People plans to pressure members of Congress across the country to sign the #PledgeToImpeach, stand up for the American people, and protect the Constitution.
