Here is a link to the reading: Brecher - Strike! - Ch 3

In Strike!, Brecher presents a history of labor uprisings in America through a working-class lens. Chapter 3, "The Ragged Edge of Anarchy," tells the story of militant strike waves in 1892 and '94, including Homestead and Pullman Strikes, each broken by military-corporate coordination. We will discuss the conditions for these strikes, and lessons from their defeat.

Socialist Sunday School #69: Direct Action & Sabotage [December 29 @ 3:00pm]

On Sunday, December 29 @ 3:00, join us for Socialist Sunday School #69: Direct Action & Sabotage. We'll be reading the Introduction of Direct Action & Sabotage: Three Classic IWW Pamphlets from the 1910s. NOTE: Remote only.

Here is a link to the reading: Direct Action & Sabotage

Direct Action & Sabotage presents 3 pamphlets from organizers with the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW). These frame direct action in a context of nonviolence; and as a historic practice of workers claiming a right to control over their trade. These tactics were repopularized in the 1910s as new industrial methods of efficiency were imposed under "scientific management," and state repression was used to defeat strikes. Newspaper sensationalism pushed a false image of wanton destruction, which these pamphlets push back against. Despite the repression of the IWW during the First Red Scare, the legacy of direct action continued in later union activity.

Socialist Movie Night: Soviet Cartoons & Proletariat Themes [January 12 @ 3:00pm]

We’ll have some fun by watching Soviet cartoons and discussing their depiction of Western capitalism.

This is a great opportunity to meet your comrades and discuss important ideas, whether you're new to these conversations or have been involved in them for a long time. Every effort will be made to create a safe, accessible, and comradely space for learning and discussion.
