Union Experience Fairs | Empowering Our Communities
Empowering Philadelphia Students and Communities through Union Experience Fairs
Today’s elementary, middle, and high school students are tomorrow’s workers, union members, voters, and elected leaders. But how many of us can say we learned about the vital role labor unions play in shaping our country while we were in school? Not many.
We know that life is better in a union.
We know that unions strengthen our schools, our communities, and our workplaces.
Philadelphia schools do not currently teach about the transformative history of labor unions and too often students make career choices without knowing all the options available to them.
Union Experience Fairs (UEF) offer us the chance to empower students and our communities by connecting them with union leaders who can inspire, educate, and increase their access to union careers. This innovative opportunity allows us to connect with K-12 students and community members across Philadelphia to explore pathways to family-sustaining union careers. UEF features representatives from various unions in the building and construction trades, public, and private sectors in various industries.
Activities at these events may include:
• Hands-on demonstrations
• Assembly-style group discussions
• Career fair setups with individual tables at schools or community venues
• Classroom presentations
• Interactive roundtable discussions
• Field trips
• And much more!
