Auto parts workers are starting to stand up alongside other low-wage workers who are demanding higher pay, better working conditions, and a voice on the job. On Thursday, June 25, concerned consumers will be stepping up to support those workers . . . and all it takes is a short drive to your local Hyundai dealer.
What? You didn’t think manufacturing workers are “low-wage” workers like those you’ve seen marching on the streets and speaking up in the news lately? According to a report by the National Employment Law Project, one in four manufacturing workers make $11.91 or less. One out of 10 make $9.60 or less. It’s even true for autoworkers, where three out of every four workers are employed at parts manufacturers, not the brand-name automakers. On average, parts workers make one-third less than those who assemble vehicles.
That’s why it’s so important that companies such as Hyundai support good jobs throughout their supply chain. A delegation to Hyundai’s U.S. headquarters will be delivering thousands of petition signatures and other information about what’s happening at Lear Corporation, one of the company’s parts suppliers in Selma, Alabama. That’s where you come in! Groups of concerned consumers, like you, will be delivering that same information to Hyundai dealerships in approximately 20 states. Enter your zip code to find an action near you.
