Why We Mourn:
In the exact moment that Trump moved the American Embassy to Jerusalem — opening his Embassy of Occupation — Israeli forces opened fire on Palestinian protesters in Gaza, killing 60 and injuring over 2,000. It was the deadliest day for Palestinians since the 2014 Gaza War. It was horrifying to see images coming from Israel/Palestine that day: smiling, well-dressed American and Israeli politicians greeting each other in Jerusalem, contrasted with thousands of bloodied Palestinian protesters in Gaza simply trying to live.
The American Jewish Establishment — who claims to speak for our entire community — has responded to this horrific violence with a total lack of empathy for this horrific event that took 60 lives in a single day. Our political leaders have also failed to speak Their refusal to hold Israel publicly accountable to its unconscionable actions is as infuriating as it is unsurprising. To them, Palestinian lives mean so much less than the idea of Jewish safety.
This is why, on Tuesday May 22nd, we must come together as a community, creating our own space to mourn the Palestinians who were killed and commit to working against the Israeli Occupation.
Because our leaders have failed us, so #IfNotUsWho will lead? And IfNotNow, when?
