Earlier this year, the Commission on the Future of the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) issued its draft report to offer different pathways to restructure our utility to make it more reliable, affordable, and democratic. It reconfirms what many have pointed out for years: Long Island and Rockaway ratepayers will be better off without PSEG. A fully public LIPA will lower rates and provide more transparency and accountability, with opportunities for more local input.
The Commission is now holding a 2nd (and final) round of public hearings and accepting written comments to get input from community members on what they want to see in a restructured LIPA before the final report, which will lead to legislation. Hearings will be in Suffolk, Nassau, and Queens. Written comments will be accepted online.
Addresses and details for registration can be found in our guide, on this event page, and on the Commission website:
Suffolk Hearing: September 12, 2023 @ 10AM - Suffolk County Legislature
Nassau Hearing: September 14, 2023 @ 10AM - Nassau County Legislature
Rockaways Hearing: September 18, 2023 @ 10AM - Rockaway YMCA
East End Hearing: September 20, 2023 @ 11AM - Southampton Town Hall
Our input will help the Commission determine the specific steps to revamp our utility into a true public power authority. We’re fighting for democratic reforms, more equitable rate structures, and community oversight of the utility. Join us!
