DSA-NYC’s Debt & Finance Working Group will host six teach-ins to introduce, explain, and set out the challenges of debt and finance issues we face as socialists.
The fourth teach-in is Wednesday, November 11, at 7:00 pm. "Household Debt, A Debtors' Union & Debt Strikes" will be held in partnership with the brilliant Debt Collective and will discuss the strategy of debtors' union and targeted debt strikes.
The Debt Collective will give a presentation on the concept of "household debt", contextualizing the rise of personal ("consumer"), community and municipal debt in a longer history of financialization, neoliberalism and racial capitalism in the United States. They will also present how 'debtors unions' and targeted debt strikes can act as means of building collective power in a financialized economy.
If you have time before the meeting, we're also encouraging attendees to read the Debt Collective's new book, Can't Pay, Won't Pay: The Case for Economic Disobedience available here from Haymarket Books.
Can't Pay, Won't Pay sets out how we can mobilise our collective power as debtors to challenge the creditor class and win universal public goods.
To attend the fourth teach-in, please sign up to this event and we will send you the Zoom details.
The additional sessions in our fall teach-in series, with RSVP links to come, will be:
| Title of teach-in | Date |
| Gentrification & Property Taxes | November 18 |
| City & State Budget | December |
These teach-ins will be accessible for those of us with no background in debt or finance. They will challenge us all to think about the structures and goals of our campaigns.
Everyone is welcome - newbies and seasoned working group members alike! This is the place for questions you haven’t been able to ask elsewhere. Each teach-in will make it clear where you can get involved, no matter your background.
We look forward to seeing you there!
Solidarity,
Debt & Finance Working Group
