9/10 NYC-DSA Brooklyn Electoral Working Group Endorsement-a-Palooza: Candidate Forum 1

Start: 2020-09-10 19:00:00 UTC Eastern Daylight Time (US & Canada) (GMT-04:00)

Event Type: Virtual
A virtual link will be communicated before the event.

Join the NYC-DSA Brooklyn Electoral Working Group for the first candidate forum in our endorsement process!

On Sept. 10, we’ll be hearing from candidates seeking our endorsement in our first candidate forum. This will be the first of at least two candidate forums during Endorsement-a-Palooza.

Prior to the meeting, we will send the relevant candidate questionnaires to Brooklyn Electoral Working Group Members (see below for membership criteria).

During the meeting, we will hear candidates speak and then members will have the opportunity to ask them questions. After we have heard from several candidates, we’ll hold a discussion of the candidates and their districts. We will not be voting on endorsements at this meeting.

This is your opportunity to hear from candidates first-hand, and an important meeting for anyone who wants to have a voice in the initial stage of NYC-DSA’s endorsement process. If you can’t make the meeting, we will be filming the candidates’ presentations and distributing it to Brooklyn Electoral Working Group members.

You can read more about our full endorsement process here: https://www.socialists.nyc/getting-our-endorsement

IMPORTANT NOTE:

You must be a DSA member in good standing (i.e. you are up to date on your national DSA dues or have a dues waiver) to join this meeting and to receive the candidate questionnaires prior to the meeting. New members are welcome! If you need to become a member or renew your dues, you can do so at https://dsausa.org/join.

To participate in the votes that will happen later in the endorsement process, you must be a voting-eligible member of the Brooklyn Electoral Working Group. That means you must meet two criteria:

  1. You must have been a member of DSA in good standing (i.e. you are up to date on your national DSA dues or have a dues waiver) for at least three months, meaning that you joined DSA before July 2020. If your dues have expired, you must renew them prior to the meeting. (This requirement is consistent with the voting eligibility proposal that passed as an amendment to the NYC-DSA Constitution at the Citywide Convention in August 2020. You can read the Bulletin with the full details here.)

  2. You must have attended at least one meeting of the Brooklyn Electoral WG in the past 12 months. A meeting could be: a general body meeting, such as the strategy meeting this summer; a specific committee meeting, such as the Communications Committee reflection meeting after the state races wrapped up; a training, such as the Field Organizer training or the VAN training.

We ask that candidates being considered for endorsement and their staff do not attend this meeting, regardless of their DSA membership status.

If you are not sure if you qualify as a voting-eligible Electoral Working Group member, email the Organizing Committee at bk.electoral@socialists.nyc.

Once you RSVP and we verify your membership status, we will send over the relevant candidate questionnaires and district dossiers. All RSVPs will be sent a Zoom video link.

Note: We ask that you RSVP no later than Wednesday, Sept. 8 at 7 p.m., to leave enough time for the BK EWG Organizing Committee to verify your membership in advance of the meeting on the following Thursday. We will verify late RSVPs as quickly as possible, but you may miss part of the meeting.
