Apartheid Free Communities & the Role of the University in Israel’s Genocide
Start: Wednesday, April 01, 2026•06:30 PM
This event brings together author Gabor Maté; activist Jeeda Musleh from Apartheid Free Communities BC; and anthropologist Maya Wind in a panel moderated by activist and scholar Jasbir Puar that addresses how Israeli institutions sustain apartheid and systemic, racist violence against Palestinians.
The University of British Columbia (UBC) currently has academic exchange programs and student mobility agreements with three universities that are integral to the apartheid Israel: The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Technion Institute of Technology, and Tel Aviv University. These contracts were renewed during this accelerated period of Israel’s genocide in Palestine.
The speakers will discuss the apartheid state of Israel and the urgency of holding UBC and institutions in the imperial core accountable for their roles in scaffolding and legitimizing the apartheid regime as a small step towards withdrawing institutional support from the injustices that deny Palestinian life and self-determination.
