An Execution Vigil for Marion Bowman: Broad River Correctional Institution
Start: Friday, January 31, 2025•04:30 PM
Join SCADP for an execution vigil at Broad River Correctional Institution (BRCI) for Marion Bowman, who is scheduled to be executed at 6pm on January 31, 2025. This vigil will be co-facilitated by SCADP and the Roman Catholic Diocese of Charleston.
For the Vigil:
- Where do I park if I'm driving? You will park across the street from the Broad River Correctional Institution in neighborhood streets. You will need to cross the street. There is a small crosswalk, but you will need to proceed with caution when you cross the street.
- Where will the vigil be held? It will be held outside of the fence at Broad River Correctional Institution, on/by the sidewalk. If you are facing the prison, we will be on the left side. You will see a gathering of people with signs, megaphones, and a big black-and-white banner. That will be us!
- What will happen during the vigil? For part of the vigil, we will have a Catholic vigil service, so you can expect invocations of the Christian Trinity and Mary, Christian scripture, prayer, and potentially singing. There will also be space for silence, and we will also read the names of the 44 people executed by the state of South Carolina since 1976. From 5:45 until 6pm (or until the execution is complete), we will hold our signs to the fence so that those in the prison can see them.
- How long with this vigil last? At least 1 hour 30 minutes, but plan to be there at least 2 hours or more. Executions by lethal injection can take as long as 5 hours (sometimes because of pending legal petitions, sometimes because the executions are botched). We plan to either stay until the hearse leaves the prison grounds, or until SCDC tells us we must leave the premises.
- Do I need to bring anything? Plan to bring a folding chair if you have one, snacks, and at least one bottle of water. We are allowed to occupy the space outside of the prison because it is public property. Plan to bring something to help you stand or stay with us. SCADP will also plan to bring some drinks and snacks for people.
- Will I be able to use the bathroom while at Broad River Correctional Institution? There are no restroom facilities outside the prison gate, so plan to use the restroom BEFORE you get to the prison grounds. There are gas stations within half a mile walk of the protest area, so those would be the closest restrooms available.
- Is there a plan for arrest/direct action at this vigil? No. SCADP is not planning to have participants arrested and does not encourage such action for this event. Our plan is simply to be present and bear witness to the execution between the prison and Broad River Road.
- Will pro-death penalty protestors be there? We do not know, but it is unlikely. If any show up, we don't expect many: the death penalty has been losing substantial support for the last 30 years. We will not engage with them. They will have their own separate area, away from our area. When Khalil Allah was executed in September 2024, there were 45 anti-death penalty protestors and zero pro-death penalty protestors.
We will be outside on mostly level grass. We do not know how far individuals may have to walk between parking their cars and arriving to the protest area. If you need help, please email us at hillary@scadp.org.
