Annual Word To Ya Motha Poetry & Art Showcase & Community Baby Shower

Start: Saturday, April 26, 202502:00 PM

End: Saturday, April 26, 202504:30 PM

Every day tens of thousands of people languish in jail simply because they

cannot afford bail. In addition to the over $9 billion wasted to incarcerate
people who have been convicted of no crime, pretrial incarceration has
catastrophic impacts on families and communities. Even a few days in jail can
ruin a person’s life. They may lose their job, their family may lose housing and
some even lose their children.

Kansas City’s recent election results advanced the carceral state by pouring
more money into an already failing jail instead of investing in what our
community actually needs. In our work bailing out multi-marginalized people
and providing participatory defense, we are in direct, constant contact with
those who have been inside the Kansas City Jail.
What we see is devastating but undeniable: Jails and prisons are not solutions
to safety—they are sites of trauma, neglect, and systemic violence. The death
trap downtown isn’t just a building; it’s a manifestation of the neglect and
cruelty embedded in our criminal justice system. This year's BailOut/KeepOut
centers community care for the safety of Black mama’s and their families.
While people play politics with the lives of Black mama’s and their children,
we remain rooted in the principles of community care. We remain rooted in
the spirit of our ancestors who had no options but to literally buy the
freedom of our loved ones. We will be bailing out Black Mama’s and offering
support services as needed. WE GET US FREE!!!!

Join us for our community baby shower and annual "Word To YA Motha"
Poetry & Art Showcase. Our work is rooted in reproductive justice, fighting for
the right to parent safely. Last year, tragedy struck a young family in our
community, and instead of receiving care, the parents were arrested. We bailed
them out and stood by them in their fight for freedom. Now, they've welcomed
a new baby, but the state has restricted them from being together. We're
asking for donations to support this family and others like them. Please drop
off donations at the Mary Williams-Neal Community Center aka(Brush Creek
Community Center)between 1:30-4:00 or text us at 816-299-9467 to arrange
pickup or delivery. Let's show this family some real community love ♥️
