Anti-Imperialist Summer School Week 5: International Governance and Empire
Start: Sunday, June 29, 2025•04:00 PM
End: Sunday, June 29, 2025•06:00 PM
This ‘Anti-Imperialist Summer School’ will consist of a series of teach-ins, held over the course of 6 weeks in May and June, which will provide a crash course in the shape and functioning of contemporary global imperialism.
The weekly sessions will take place Sundays from 4-6pm and run for approximately 90 minutes. All sessions will be hybrid—when you RSVP, scroll down on the confirmation page to get the Zoom link under “Instructions From Your Host”!
In the fifth session of MDC DSA’s Beyond the Bombs: Anti-Imperialist Summer School teach-in series, we will examine the role that the institutions and structures of international governance—specifically, the United Nations and the international legal system—play in the imperialist world-system. We will trace the history of these institutions and their formation by colonial powers as a response to the shifts in the 20th-century imperial order, and will explore the ways in which they have both been instrumentalized as tools of imperialism and wielded as platforms for Global South nations to challenge and critique empire. Grounding our discussion in the context of Israel’s ongoing genocide in Palestine, which has challenged many of the assumptions of liberal internationalism that underpin the international governance system, we will critically examine what opportunities—if any—this system and its institutions can offer to anti-imperialists today.
NOTE: This event will be recorded and may be shared on MDC DSA’s social media platforms for educational purposes. By participating, you acknowledge that you may be videotaped and livestreamed. If you wish to avoid being recorded, you should take efforts to avoid appearing on camera or speaking.
