The movement to stop the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL) is growing stronger by the day, and it’s time for all of us to rise up and play a role in this fight – no matter where we live.
Join us on Tuesday, September 13 for a solidarity action and rally at 400 W. 15th Street (Corner of 15th and Guadalupe, street parking on San Antonio St) at 7pm calling on President Obama to instruct the Army Corps of Engineers to revoke the permits for this dirty oil pipeline.
This action is part of a growing movement that represents far more than solidarity: Energy Transfer Partners - the company behind the DAPL pipeline - is based in Dallas, Texas with a government affairs office located in downtown Austin. The corporate tactics of disregard for people and their waterways is not new to this company or those like it. In fact, Energy Transfer is responsible for the Trans-Pecos pipeline - a controversial 148 mile gas pipeline through unspoiled areas of West Texas into Mexico.
DAPL is further connected to Texas because our state is a key site of Native Resistance to projects that threaten the land and water. A key challenge to DAPL is based on an improper tribal consultation process by the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) in complying with National Historic Preservation Act section 106: this is the exact same issue with the Dos Republicas coal mine in Eagle Pass, Texas. The Dos Republicas mine is actively disrupting a sacred site and pollutes local waterways along the Rio Grande river near Eagle Pass and has received major opposition by local Indigenous groups in Texas. In April, 26 indigenous nations united in opposition to the Dos Republicas mine and marched from the border to the mine site. We have called on the USACE to issue a proper consultation with Texas tribes, and are now supporting the call on President Obama to instruct the USACE to stop these destructive projects.
These fights are connected, and you have the opportunity to be part of the growing movement in Texas.
By gathering on the 13th, we hope to call attention to the brave water and land protectors at Standing Rock and shine a light on the presence of destructive oil, gas and coal companies right here in Austin.
Let us know you're coming -- sign up on this page to receive action updates.
We recognize the importance of prioritizing the voice of Native people at this and other actions. Each of us can stand in powerful and respectful solidarity with the Camp of the Sacred Stones, the Red Warrior Camp, and the Native people of Texas & their allies who are fighting the Dos Republicas coal mine and Trans-Pecos Pipeline near Big Bend.
