We are in the throes of two major changes to Sussex local government:
- the creation of a mayoral authority for the whole county; and
- the reorganisation of local government into single-tier 'unitary' authorities
Compass groups in Sussex are concerned that many people don't know about these changes, or how to make their views heard. We also want to share the work that Compass nationally is doing on the issue.
Key issues include:
- the voting system for the mayoralty (First Past the Post) and how to ensure a progressive success - with multiple parties competing, a party with minority support, including Reform, could win the election
- what powers will be devolved to the mayoral authorities, and how will they be funded
- how will local accountability be delivered in the new authorities
- how will the mayoralty tackle the huge differences between the urban and rural parts of Sussex.
We have two brilliant speakers to put us in the picture.
Dr Matthew Fright is Senior Researcher in the Devolution Team at the Institute for Government (and a Sussex resident)
Lena Swedlow is Campaigns Manager at Compass, and is leading on devolution for Compass nationally.
Join us for this essential zoom and put your questions and concerns about devolution and local government reorganisation in Sussex to our speakers.
