The January 2022 meeting of the Abolish Everything Series will focus on "Carceral Ecology"—the link between policing, prisons, and the environment.

The main text for this lesson is centered in Baltimore, addressing the themes of lead poisoning and police violence. David Correia's essay in Violent Order: Essays on the Nature of Police, "Poisoned and Policed to Death: Korryn Gaines, Freddie Gray, and the Nature of Police".

We will also discuss the short zine, Critical Abolitionist Environmental Justice by Keala Uchôa.

Finally, as an optional read, please choose one of the two following articles to read (or at least skim) which both how prisoners are disproportionately exposed to toxins and other environmental hazards, as well as the effects of climate change. The two articles are: Adam Mahoney, "America's Biggest Jails are Frontline Environmental Justice Communities" or Candice Bernd, Zoe Loftus-Farren, and Maureen Nandini Mitra, "America's Toxic Prisons: The Environmental Injustices of Mass Incarceration".
