Book Talk - "Winning Richmond" with Gayle McLaughlin
Start: Tuesday, May 29, 2018•07:30 PM

Come hear corporate free candidate for Lt. Governor, Gayle McLaughlin, present her new memoir, Winning Richmond: How a Progressive Alliance Won City Hall.
The book tells the story of Gayle's leadership within a group of concerned activists who formed the Richmond Progressive Alliance. Together this group transformed the city into a national leader in sustainability, equity and grassroots democracy.
The book has gotten great reviews. It's not only a well-written and inspiring memoir but also an amazing resource for those wishing to organize, advocate, run for and win electoral office, or otherwise contribute to a strong progressive movement. Says nationally renowned labor activist and author of Refinery Town: Big Oil, Big Money and the Remaking of an American City, Steve Early:
"Blue-collar Richmond was once notorious for its street crime, gun violence, poverty, and pollution. During McLaughlin’s two terms as mayor, the city acquired a far different reputation—for battling Big Oil, Big Soda, Big Banks, and the landlord lobby. Today, this majority minority community of 110,000 is cleaner, greener, safer, and more equitable because it boosted the minimum wage, adopted rent control, curbed police misconduct, defended immigrants, and sought increased tax revenue and environmental justice from its largest employer, a Chevron refinery."
