BREAKING CHAINS AT WALMART: GUESTWORKERS TO HOLD 24-HOUR FAST AT HOME OF WALMART BOARD MEMBER TO END FORCED LABOR

Start: Saturday, June 30, 201211:00 AM

Guestworkers at Walmart supplier C.J.’s Seafood joined the National Guestworkers Alliance and went on strike to expose forced labor on June 4, 2012. C.J.’s forced the guestworkers to work 24-hour shifts without overtime pay and under constant threats of physical violence. Walmart attempted to cover up the forced labor, and has refused to meet with the workers in spite of calls from 140,000 supporters. Now, the workers are holding a 24-hour fast—one hour for every hour of the shifts they were forced to work—to demand Walmart meet with them and pledge to stop profiting from forced labor on their supply chain. The fast will follow the revelation by a national commission of civil and labor rights leaders of suspected cases of forced labor at up to a dozen other Walmart suppliers. The guestworkers and their allies invite civil rights leaders, labor leaders, community members, clergy and all people of conscience to join them in their 24-hour fast for justice from June 30 to July 1. Ways to support: Join the workers for the launch of their fast at 11 AM in front of Michelle Burns’ penthouse apartment, commit to fasting with the workers on June 30th,. Membership organizations and unions: Have your president or director join the fast, sign up for a time slot to bring your members to meet the workers during their fast, donate to the workers’ strike fund (at http://www.guestworkeralliance.org). Clergy/religious bodies: Religious leaders join the fast, turn out to launch and/or close out, leaders and members of congregation sign up to meet workers to provide support during the night. Musicians can join fasting workers to keep sprits up over course of their fast. OUTSIDE OF NYC? Fast from where you are. Publicly commit to the fast from your home city or town. Sign up on the campaign website (guestworkeralliance.org) to let us know you will fast on June 30.
