Sweltering Cities is excited to announce that we are now working on the ground in Queensland, with our launch event coming up in Brisbane on February 12th at the Griffith University South Bank Campus!

Sweltering Cities works at the intersection of climate justice, inequality and health. We’re building grassroots power, telling compelling stories of extreme heat impacts and winning strategic campaigns that will make a real difference in cooling our homes and suburbs. With El Nino causing soaring temperatures and unprecedented storms in Queensland, natural disasters have plagued our 2023-2024 Queensland summer.

There has never been a more critical time to understand and advocate for Queenslanders’ experiences with extreme heat and the impacts that it is having on our local communities. We are so excited to be kick starting 2024 with our on the ground presence in Brisbane to bring attention to Queenslanders’ experiences with extreme heat across the state.

We invite you to join us at our very first Queensland event, “Brisbane - A Heat Safe City?” at Room SO5 2.04 QCA Lecture Theatre and Gallery, Lecture Theatre, Griffith University South Bank Campus from 5:45pm on Monday, February 12th 2024.

If you are unable to attend in person, we will also be live streaming the event on Instagram, so follow us to watch remotely.

This event will bring together expert panelists to discuss the impacts of extreme heat in Brisbane from healthcare to urban planning and community impacts. Our panelists include:

Associate Professor Shannon Rutherford - Climate Action Beacon, Cities Research Institute and School of Medicine and Dentistry at Griffith University

Ryan McNeilly Smith - Senior Planner at Meridian Urban and PhD Candidate at the University of the Sunshine Coast

Anna Campbell - Executive Officer for Queensland Walks

Come along to connect with others working to make Brisbane a heat safe city.

Time: Doors open at 5:45pm for a 6pm start. Panel concludes at 7:30pm with light refreshments and mingling until 8:00pm.

Share your story with extreme heat by completing our 2023-2024 Summer Survey where we are working towards understanding how heatwaves impact different people across Australia, and what ideas people have for cooler suburbs, safer homes, and better heatwave support.
