Leaky roof not fixed?
Pest problem left unaddressed?
Absentee landlord got you down?
If you’ve ever rented an apartment for any extended period of time, you have probably had some run-ins with bad landlords. The Infrastructure Committee is looking to hear from anyone who's ever been screwed over by their landlord, especially if they jacked up your rent or moved to evict you without a reasonable cause.
This event is an opportunity to share your story of run-ins with nightmare apartments and enjoy a hot meal with others who have been there. In the spirit of Thanksgiving, we encourage folks to bring a dish to pass. Hot food will be provided by the chapter!
About Good Cause Eviction
The DSA is working with a group of local organizations that is currently fighting to get Buffalo to join 15 other cities and towns across the state in adopting some extremely basic tenant protections in the Good Cause Eviction Protection legislation currently under consideration by the Buffalo Common Council. The law would prevent landlords from evicting tenants in retaliation for speaking up about needed repairs or pest problems, it also caps rent increases at 10% annually (still too high, but it’s better than no cap).
The Buffalo Common Council has refused to bring the law up for a vote despite the fact that they passed a resolution supporting it at the state level back in 2022. At this event we will be asking people to share their stories and we will be recording testimonials to share on social media with consent. As the federal government cuts food stamps, HEAP, and section 8 vouchers for poor and working people it becomes clearer than ever that the status quo is unacceptable.
This event is being held and promoted by the Buffalo Democratic Socialists of America and is not sponsored by or representative of the views of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Buffalo.
