Arts of Protest: Signs, Symbols, Badges – Workshop and Picnic

This daytime mid-mountains event is a chance for Rebels young and old to revel in the Arts of Protest, donating art materials and cardboard, making signs, posters, badges, stickers, and getting the XR symbol screen printed on their clothes, in a hall adjoining a park with children’s play equipment.

This is designed to be an informal fun event where Rebels and their families and friends can join together and make materials for protests and upcoming actions. The Bullaburra Community Hall will be turned into an Arts of Protest studio with different activities going on.

As the Community Hall is not close to shops (though there are some in nearby Wentworth Falls or Lawson), Rebels are advised to bring their own food and drink for a picnic. A stove, kettle and fridge are on site, which is adjacent to a pleasant park with a children’s playground, but few tables, so bring a picnic rug.

The four main components of the event are:

1. Poster-making

-       Poster Design class at 12:30 - 1:00 pm by a veteran poster maker, Peter Chapman.

2. General sign making

-       Rebels asked to bring their own paper, card, cardboard, cloth, glue, glitter, etc. to make their signs on, as well as brushes, paints, water jars etc. Donations of paint welcomed.

-       Subject to weather conditions, painting involving house paints may be done outside to minimise vapours in the hall.

3. Badge & sticker making

-       Printing slogans and signs onto coloured papers and making badges, using how ever many badge making machines can be scrounged.

-       Printing slogans and signs onto stick-on mailing labels that people might bring.

4. Screen printing

-       Experienced screen printers from XRBM will be on site to screen XR symbols onto your (clean, flat) clothing. (Perhaps for a gold coin donation to cover cost of ink.) Subject to weather conditions, printing may be done outside to minimise vapours in the hall.
