‘But We Don’t Pollute!’: The Responsibility of Fossil Fuel Companies for Global Emissions and Climate Harms

Start: Saturday, October 3, 2020 at 11:00 AM GMT

This is a virtual event

This talk will explore the responsibility of fossil fuel companies for emissions and climate harm. Despite strong arguments for the causal and moral responsibility of these companies for global fossil fuel-based emissions and climate harms, most continue to deny their responsibility for a particular and important set of emissions: emissions that arise when consumers use and burn their fuels. How could such a denial succeed? Alice Evatt will canvass some ways these companies could defend such a claim and then demonstrate why they are unsuccessful. These companies cannot escape either causal or moral responsibility for climate change — the question is, how do we get them to accept that responsibility and act on it?

Alice is a PhD candidate specialising in climate ethics at the University of Oxford and Balliol College. She is interested in driving progress on climate action and engagement and using her work to push for progressive change in climate policy.

Her talk will be live streamed on the Fridays for Future International Facebook page and followed by a discussion where questions from the attendants are taken up.

Alice is also the project lead for the recently launched Oxford Climate Alumni Network as well as the Director of Outreach for the Oxford Climate Society, a society dedicated to developing informed climate leaders and facilitating climate learning, initiatives and change within the university and beyond.
