In this Praxis session, we will explore the history of The Black Panther Party (BPP), from their rise in response to the shortcomings of the Civil Rights Movement to the decline and dissolution of the party. We will cover major figures within the Black Panther Party and their impact. There will be discussion of their armed observations of the Oakland police and their sudden propulsion to the national stage with their 1967 Gun Law Protest. We will look at Huey P. Newton, co-founder and Defense Minister, and the "Free Huey!" campaign, women's prominent but fraught role in the party, and the development of their many successful survival programs. Due to their revolutionary actions, we will also look at the reaction of the Counter Intelligence Program (COINTELPRO) and how its suppression of the party led to the assassination of members such as Fred Hampton. Discussion will cover their ideology, their actions, and the contradictions that both built and broke down the party. The history of the Black Panther Party is deep, full of tensions, and soaring successes which makes it a vital example for socialists of all kinds to learn from.
