Join us for a press conference with Council members Carmen De La Rosa and Lincoln Restler to close the Eric Adams REC Loophole in our city's leading jobs and climate law, Local Law 97!
Back in 2019, a multi-generational, multi-racial coalition of New Yorkers won a huge victory in passing Local Law 97 to cut pollution from buildings, lower our utility bills and bring in thousands of good green jobs into NYC. However once Mayor Adams came into office, he used his executive authority to put in loopholes for the Real Estate industry to avoid actually doing the things intended to move buildings off fossil fuels and make the city safer and affordable for tenants and homeowners alike.
Now the City Council needs to step up to close one of those big loopholes, the Renewable Energy Credit (REC) loophole. This is a loophole that allows Big Landlords to buy "Renewable Energy Credits" instead of actually just cutting pollution in buildings and protecting New Yorkers. For more information on the REC loophole and the bill to close it, check out this memo.
Despite our current MAGA mayor's influence and alignment with the wealthiest interests within the Real Estate industry and Billionaire class, Local law 97 has been immensely successful. In NYC, 92% of buildings are complying with the law currently and state programs and legislation are moving to ensuring that number stays high as we continue to follow the climate & jobs law. Now, with a mayor that seems to be more on Trump's side than with the residents here in the city, we need our City Council to step up and close the REC Loophole!
