The day before the US celebrates freedom July Fourth, the Southern Piedmont Circle of the NC Poor People’s Campaign and our community partners will rally on Freedom Drive in Charlotte—near the Department of Social Services (DSS) office—to stand up for critical services needed for the most vulnerable families, children, and elderly in our community.
- What: Charlotte Stand Up For SNAP & Medicaid!
- When: Wednesday, July 3, 2025 - 10:00-11:30am
- Where: 3215 Freedom Drive, Charlotte, NC 28202
Starting last week, we started getting reports of SNAP benefits being withheld by DSS due to understaffing and chaos created by DOGE and the federal government. While the unprecedented and cruel cuts to Medicaid and SNAP in the budgets being debated in DC are still not enacted, qualified recipients are already losing access to some of these services. Previous efforts to cut domestic assistance programs were required to be reversed, but many local recipients are visiting the Department of Social Services to find out why their benefits are not being processed.
We cannot let them move forward with drastic cuts to social services in order to pay for tax cuts for billionaires and massive increase in spending for ICE.
People are registering their complaints about services like SNAP and Medicaid already being cut off. They cannot purchase food for their children and their grandparents can't access healthcare. Also apparently contributing to this critical situation are government employee layoffs that occurred and technology that was compromised, which are impeding timely delivery of funds.
Join us on Freedom Drive outside the DSS office for a demonstration and speak out. We are NOT protesting the DSS office workers in Charlotte, but instead shining a LIGHT on the places and people who will be and are being harmed most by the ungodly attack on the wellbeing of our people.
