LABOR SOLIDARITY FILM SCREENING: Nae Pasarán
September 11, 2023 marked 50 years since a US-backed military coup overthrew the democratically-elected government of Chile and helped to install a brutal Fascist dictatorship.
The critically acclaimed 2018 documentary Nae Pasarán tells the incredible story of the Scottish union auto workers of Rolls Royce whose actions in support of the Chilean people, grounded half of the South American country’s national air force. Lasting four years, It was the longest single act of solidarity against the government of General Augusto Pinochet following his murderous right-wing take-over of the Socialist pro-labor government of President Salvador Allende. Six months after the coup, the factory workers took action. They refused to repair aircraft engines from the Chilean Air Force, leaving the engines outside to rust. The tremendous impact of their gesture, long believed to be meaningless, is finally revealed in this story told by the workers themselves.
There will be a discussion following the screening. Pizza, popcorn, and refreshments will be available.
This program is sponsored by Jobs with Justice Chicago and its Workers Rights Board with the participation of the presenting exhibitions and programs about the history of US destabilization efforts to Chilean democracy.
