Join us for #ChiCrosswalkAction, a protest to demand safety improvements at the crosswalk on W Winona & N Broadway. This unprotected crosswalk sits across from an elementary school and has been the site of horrific crashes, yet little has been done to protect pedestrians.

On Thursday, July 27th at 5:30 PM, we will gather at the crosswalk to call for urgently needed safety measures. We demand the city install a raised crosswalk to slow vehicles and add metal bollards in the median. Swapping the parking lane and bike lane could also help slow cars.

At 6:00 PM we will demonstrate by walking back and forth across the crosswalk, showing the alders of Wards 47 and 48 that action must be taken now to protect children and families. Bring cameras to document the unsafe conditions. The time for studies and delays has passed - we need safety improvements at this crosswalk immediately!

Our demands:

We demand that 47th Ward Alderman Matt Martin and 48th Ward Alderwoman Leni Manaa-Hoppenworth do the following:

• Immediately install two raised crosswalks at the intersection of Broadway & Winona. Both of these crosswalks should have metal bollards in the median to protect pedestrians in the middle of the road. This would reduce vehicle speed and improve
• Immediately install curb extensions on both sidewalks to prevent vehicles from passing vehicles stopped for pedestrians. A major source of pedestrian injuries and fatalities at this intersection is vehicles going around other vehicles stopped for pedestrians. Installing traffic islands would only require moving one parking spot and would be a simple solution to this problem.
• Immediately install a pedestrian island on the north crosswalk with metal bollards. There is no pedestrian refuge currently for pedestrians crossing the northmost sidewalk. The turning lane at this intersection is unnecessarily long and could easily accommodate a pedestrian island.

Both of these actions should be taken immediately with aldermanic menu funding. Alderman Martin and Alderwoman Manaa-Hoppenworth must work with CDOT to ensure that the raised crosswalk adequately protects pedestrians and children from nearby schools.
