Community Defense Volunteer Training: Know Your Rights Team

When: Wednesday, April 23, 2025 • 6:00 PM
Where: Hybrid Training. Please register to receive the Zoom link or the in-person address.

Please Note: Due to the sensitive nature of this training, an El Pueblo Unido team member will personally follow up with each registration to confirm participation. Our in-person training will be held at a trusted, private sanctuary space, not open to the public. ICE is not welcomed here.

What: As part of our Education Services Program, El Pueblo Unido will be training volunteers to lead Know Your Rights workshops and carry out educational outreach in immigrant communities across Atlantic and Cape May counties. This outreach will equip families, workers, tenants, and youth with the knowledge they need to navigate encounters with ICE, protect their loved ones, and assert their rights under pressure.

Volunteers will be trained to deliver this information in a clear, accessible, and empowering way. In this hands-on training, we’ll walk you step-by-step through our workshop model, educational materials, and key concepts, like how to tell the difference between a judicial warrant and an administrative ICE warrant. You’ll also learn how to adapt this knowledge for different audiences and settings. On Days of Action, we’ll hit the streets, bringing Know Your Rights education directly to our people in public spaces, work sites, churches, supermarkets, community events, and anywhere else our community gathers.

Who: El Pueblo Unido staff will be there to support you every step of the way. Being bilingual is a plus, but not required, we can pair you with a Spanish-speaking team member if needed. No prior public speaking or legal experience is necessary, just your commitment to community education, belief in people power, and willingness to stand up and speak out.

Additional Trainings:  This Know Your Rights Team Training will be one of four volunteer opportunities offered through our Community Defense Project, a grassroots action plan to protect immigrant communities from hyper-enforcement by ICE (“la Migra”). Other teams will include the Family Preparedness Team, which will help run our Power of Attorney Clinics; the Accompaniment Team, which will support community members during critical appointments; and the Rapid Response Team, which will help build and activate our ICE Watch network.

Your participation as a volunteer is essential to our resistance.
