Direct Action Training for HERC Campaign
Start: Saturday, November 18, 2023•10:00 AM
End: Saturday, November 18, 2023•03:00 PM
After sustained pressure, Hennepin County has finally agreed to develop a closure plan for the HERC trash burner. But the resolution calls for closure by as late as *2040*. That is unacceptable! 17 more years of the HERC is devastating to community health. 17 more years of the HERC is 6 million more tons of waste burned into people's lungs. 17 more years of greenhouse gases from the 31st biggest emitter of GHGs in the state.
We must build more pressure to win a quicker shutdown and restitution for the harm HERC has caused. As this Zero Waste USA transition plan shows, HERC can be closed by 2025. In fact, the county is taking on millions of debt each year to keep HERC running ($37.7 million since 2012) -- money that should have been going towards real waste solutions.
Join us on Saturday November 18 from 10am-3pm to get education and training in direct action strategy and tactics from experienced trainers. This will be oriented around environmental justice direct actions and will be applicable to other struggles, but we will focus on HERC-related actions.
Lunch provided. Location details will be sent prior to the training.
HERC is a giant trash burner owned by Hennepin County and located near Minneapolis’ Target Field between Downtown and North Minneapolis.
It has burned 1,000 tons of trash almost every day since it was built in 1989. It is the single biggest polluter in all of Hennepin County.
It emits numerous health-damaging air pollutants into some of the most overburdened and health-impacted communities in MN-- including lead, particulate matter, toxic PFAS, and carcinogenic dioxins from burning many tons of plastic each day, etc. The population within a 3-mile radius has a higher concentration of low-income households than 89 percent of the state, and a higher percentage of people of color than 90 percent of the state.
For more information about the incinerator, see this fact sheet.
