In “Republic In Peril: American Empire and the Liberal Tradition”, David Hendrickson argues that America’s outsized military spending and global commitments undermine American liberty. Hendrickson argues that we must restore the liberal tradition of America’s founders and reject the warfare state prosecuted by the Republican and Democratic parties and accepted by the American people. The U.S. should renounce great power antagonism, engage Russia and China, and stop regime change throughout the globe. Rather than claiming a superior role as judge, jury, and executioner, the United States must abandon militarism and accept our place as a nation among nations.
