Dissenters Black August Panel: Black Legacy of Rebellion
In commemoration of Black August- a month dedicated to honoring the legacy of Black revolutionaries, political prisoners, and freedom fighters, we're bringing together some special guests. Our panel will explore the roots of Black August, the ongoing struggle for abolition, and how our generation can continue the fight for collective liberation in an era of rising repression and resistance.
Black August originated in the 1970s to commemorate the deaths of Black revolutionaries like George Jackson, Jonathan Jackson, and Khatari Gaulden, while also celebrating resistance against state violence and mass incarceration. Today, it remains a time for study, discipline, fasting, and solidarity with political prisoners.
- Claudia De la Cruz - Executive director of Pastors for Peace, 2024 presidential candidate for the Party for Socialism and Liberation.
- Dr. Kim Holder - Member of the Harlem chapter of the Black Panther Party trained by Assata Shakur. Professor of Africana studies at Rowan University.
- Jaylen Strong - poet-worker, librarian curator, and organizer with Artists Against Apartheid.
Join us as we discuss the ties between white supremacy and militarism--and the long history of Black resistance against both.
