After the Shift: Open Mic Night is a powerful, worker-centered gathering rooted in expression, community, and collective release. Designed for those who carry the weight of long shifts, short staffing, and the daily grind, this event creates space to say what often goes unsaid, through poetry, music, and storytelling, or simply by being in the room with others who understand. The night transforms lived workplace experiences into art, connection, and shared energy.
Hosted by SEIU, Union of Southern Service Workers (USSW), and Workers United, After the Shift brings together worker voices and cultural organizers committed to dignity, equity, and building power on and off the job. Featuring an incredible lineup of artists, including Josephus Thompson III, Brandon Ruffin, Dasan Ahanu, James Daniels, and Flores Tochi, the evening blends open mic performances with curated sets, creating a dynamic and accessible space for both first-time and seasoned performers.
Taking place on Thursday, April 23 from 7:00–9:00 PM at Rhythm & Brews in Durham, NC, the event offers free food, live performances, and an open invitation to show up as you are. Whether you come to share your story or to listen and connect, After the Shift is a reminder that workers don’t just keep things running, we carry stories worth hearing.
