Emergency Call - e4a now
High energy bills cost lives this winter, and they’re climbing again. But right now we’ve got a chance to bring them down, join us for an emergency meeting.
On April 1st, our energy bills will surge by more than £100 on average. Just a week after energy network companies announced £4 billion in windfall profits.
Record high energy prices for 3 years have led to nearly £5 billion in unpaid bills. We've seen zero action from Labour or Tories to actively bring prices down, or protect us from future spikes as the world grows more destabilised.
But while we’ve been freezing over winter, Ofgem is feeling the heat and it’s time to turn it up on them as high as we can.
Our calls to abolish standing charges forced them to make a change, firms now have to offer 2 options, a deal with and one without standing charges.
Ofgem are consulting on how energy should be priced on zero standing charge deals. And one consideration is a ‘Rising Block Tariff’. Let’s explain this technical term:
-
We can use a certain amount of energy, so many kilowatts, at an initial low price, even free. Hopefully enough to cover our essential needs and not live in fear or discomfort.
-
If you use more than that allocation, your next few kilowatts are charged slightly higher.
-
And so on until those heating mansions and swimming pools pay a significant price.
The system is what some call a National Energy Guarantee. If done right, we call it Energy For All.
“Each household will receive, free of charge, enough energy to ensure it can cover its needs. This includes for instance adequate heating, lighting, cooking, hot water, refrigeration, charging phone and digital connectivity, and where needed, hearing aids, medical equipment, stairlifts, and wheelchairs.” - e4a Manifesto.
Join us to plan a response to demand fairer and cheaper energy pricing that meets our needs.
