Earlier in October, the management at ECCC circulated draft Terms of Reference for a WFA Committee for employees at ECCC to union executives at local 524 for input. The WFA committee held its first meeting on October 27 to finalize the Terms of Reference.

In light of movement from the employer at ECCC to establish the WFA committee and the announcements in the 2025 Federal Budget, we are concerned about significant cuts facing the department and are hosting virtual town halls to respond.

We do not currently have any updates about WFA at IAAC and CWA but members from these agencies are invited to join the townhall.

These cuts at ECCC will make it impossible to fulfill the core mandate of the department to take action on clean growth and climate change, prevent and manage pollution, conserve nature, and predict weather and environmental conditions. These cuts threaten our environment and the services Canadians depend on to protect our environment and our shared future.

To date, the employer at IAAC and CWA has not issued any Terms of Reference, however, both organizations are experiencing staffing freezes and, while details remain limited, these signals have understandably raised concern among CAPE members about job security and the capacity of their agencies to deliver on their mandates.

You are invited to a virtual town hall. A Zoom link will be provided upon registration.

At the townhall, we want to:

  • Share all of the information we have received to date about ECCC’s WFA plans and how we expect it to unfold

  • Invite you to talk about how the current context is impacting you and your teams.

  • Discuss what actions we can take collectively to fight these austerity cuts and support each other during this time period.
