Endless growth is killing us. But what's the alternative?

We can't have endless growth on a finite planet - that much is clear. But what is our alternative vision? What is the world we are striving for?

This event is jointly hosted by Extinction Rebellion and Beyond Billionaires.

It will be a bit like a book club in that you will be offered some reading in advance. You will get the most out of the discussion if you do some preparation, but you are welcome to join us even if you don't have time for much preparation.

We will be exploring two recent international reports.

The first of these is the UN report, A Roadmap for Eradicating Poverty Beyond Growth, put together under the mandate of Olivier De Schutter, UN Special Rapporteur on extreme poverty and human rights. It describes rights-based, post-growth policies that make poverty eradication a deliberate outcome of restructured economies — not a trickle-down side effect of destructive growth. Here's a summary. Here's the full report. Have a look at pages 10-12 for a very interesting list of the measures that could be taken to achieve a fairer society that lives within ecological limits. Or have a look at this inspiring video with an overview by Olivier De Shutter- just 28 minutes.

The second report we will consider is the Global Justice Report: A Plan for Equality & Prosperity Within Planetary Boundaries, by eminent economist Thomas Piketty and numerous others. Here's a brief summary from the authors, published in The Guardian. Read just the summary, or any of the chapters here. Here is a PowerPoint presentation with lots of graphs! (The image in the event tile is from the Global Justice Report.)

Please let us know if you will be attending in person or online, as in-person places will be limited.,
