Evanston Ceasefire Presents: The Past and Future Fight for Palestine
A teach-in + art workshop on Evanston’s institutional censorship of Palestinian perspectives
An array of voices from the community will provide a deeper look at the fight to support Palestinians in Evanston, including the ways our institutions from the Evanston City Council to our local school districts are failing us, the anti-democratic influences at play, where we go next, and what you can do to help.
4:15 - 5:15 pm: Art Workshop, led by artist Liora Ostroff
5:30 - 7:30 pm: Speaker Program, moderated by Lesley Williams
Evanston Ceasefire Presents: The Past and Future Fight for Palestine was inspired by, and will include discussion of, the recent censure of ETHS history teacher Andrew Ginsberg for displaying a poster from Jewish Currents Magazine based on Rabbi Abraham Heschel's writings on Jewish dissent.
The evening will also include discussion of the blocked campaign for an Evanston Ceasefire Resolution, the systemic censorship of Palestinian perspectives in D202/D65 schools and at Northwestern University, and the groups influencing our institutions. Featured speakers will include former Evanston City officials, students and faculty from our local D202/D65 schools, students and faculty at Northwestern University, legal experts, local Evanston organizers, and more.
And as a special treat, Baltimore-based artist Liora Ostroff – who created the 2024 Winter Gift poster for Jewish Currents Magazine that Andrew Ginsberg was censured for displaying – joins us here in Evanston to lead a hands-on art workshop! Five art teachers, including Liora Ostroff, will be on hand to teach basic printmaking skills, after which everyone will be able to make their own print. They will have templates that you can use or you can make your own designs. We are encouraging people to make Pro-Palestine and/or pro-human rights images to display in your own homes and share widely. The workshop is targeted for ages 10 and up, but we can accommodate younger children with parental supervision!
