Welcome to DC DSA’s Fiber Arts group!
This group aims to promote, celebrate, and build community around the fiber arts, including knitting, crocheting, sewing, embroidering, felting, and needle-punching. This group is be a way for members to develop fiber skills, mitigate burnout, and connect organizers who normally work in different realms. We plan to have sessions dedicated to learning skills such as darning and patching, as well as creating agitpop for the chapter and other radical causes, both for visibility and fundraising projects. Overall, we believe having a fiber arts community strengthens our bonds as organizers and community members while curating a low-barrier space where organizers can exchange ideas and be creative.
Our October meeting will be our third and final knitting/crocheting bee of the year, in which we will knit and crochet squares for quilted blankets! We are partnering with the Foundry Church, through whom we will donate blankets to those in need for this coming fall and winter.
Our goal for this coming meeting is to continue knitting/crocheting blanket squares, as well as weave in the ends of existing squares. The plan is to at last assemble the squares into blankets at our November meeting, on 17 November 2025. If you have been working on squares on your own time, we would love to see them at this coming meeting!
Items to bring:
Yarn: We will be providing yarn, but additional yarn donations are always welcome, especially cotton or synthetic yarn (in case of wool allergies)
Knitting needles/crochet hooks: we will have some extras available, but please bring your own if you have them!
Knit/crocheted squares: if you’d like to get a head’s start and make squares in advance, that’s amazing!!! We are looking for 6”x6” squares, or 1’x1’ if you’d like to make some larger ones.
Friends: Please invite a pal (or two) for, as the old adage goes—many hands make light work!
Gossip/Chisme: what’s a knitting bee without stories?
If you aren’t able to make it, but would like to contribute, please email us at dcfiberartscollective@gmail.com; we are happy to coordinate pick-ups of squares from community members who aren’t able to attend.
