Protest the Bad Franchise Deal!
Start: Monday, May 24, 2021•12:00 PM
End: Monday, May 24, 2021•01:00 PM
Join our protest at San Diego City Hall on May 24th to protest the bad franchise energy deals put forward by Mayor Gloria and to demand that the Council to reject this bad deal.
This is a COVID-safe in-person protest / rally with great speakers, creative visuals and an opportunity to hand deliver your message to the Mayor's office. Make and bring a sign (we'll have some there too)! We ask all participants to agree to our COVID-safe expectations: wear a mask, social distance, and don't come if you have been exposed or have COVID-like symptoms.
Take these three steps (see our action toolkit for details on calling in and talking points)
- Come to the COVID-safe protest on Monday, May 24
- Submit an e-comment to the City Council
- Call into the City Council Meeting on Tuesday, May 25 (meeting starts 11 am)

WHY THIS IS IMPORTANT: These bad franchise agreements hamstring the City's ability to achieve its climate and equity goals. Despite advocacy from climate, environmental justice and other orgs as well as public input, the agreements fail to deliver.
- SDG&E is a bad partner and can’t be trusted. The proposed bid won’t hold them accountable. SDG&E has a record of continuously fighting renewable energy and rooftop solar (as well as working to expand extraction and burning fracked gas extraction), and violating its existing agreement with the City. These agreements lock us into bad terms for 20 years (we had asked for 3-5 years max) and there is No Right of Purchase clause that would allow the City to exit the deal at will.
- SDG&E puts profits over people. San Diegans pay the highest rates in the continental U.S. for dirty energy while SDG&E makes $1 million a day for its shareholders and execs by pushing the costs of its expanding fossil fuel business onto San Diego families and businesses.
- The Council can - and must - stop this bad deal. Mayor Gloria has produced essentially the same bad deal that Mayor Faulconer proposed. We call on the City Council to unanimously reject this bad franchise deal and commission a study of Public Power.
