Fuel For Thought
from fuel poverty to climate justice
Fuel For Thought is a series of monthly collective learning sessions run by Fuel Poverty Action. A space to share research and lived experience, tackle lies, clear up confusion and answer questions.
Fuel For Thought Twenty: Wind and Solar: The Global Transition. Thursday, 17 July, 6.30 PM.
Following on from last month, this July, we’re looking beyond our domestic energy system, towards a global view of the movement towards renewable energy. And having a closer look at what it has actually meant for people and the planet to “transition” away from fossil fuels as our primary source of energy.
With a focus on the resources needed to power the transition, we’ll be asking whether the global shift to renewable energy is the one we’re after. Are we blinkered by our faith in the promise of clean energy? Are our planet's resources and people's labour continuing to be diverted to soaring profits and rising emissions? Which course should we demand and take to ensure renewables don't also renew fossil fuels' legacy of planetary degradation?
Confirmed speakers include:
Diana Salazar — Latin American Coordinator at LMN. She will speak about her work with communities affected by British-linked mining companies.
Jake Simms — Just Transition Coordinator at LMN. He will speak about the need for a just energy transition that minimises mineral demands and respects the rights of mining affected communities.
Cllr Mael Garrec — Mebyon Kernow Penryn. Mael supports the devolution of more political and financial powers to Cornwall and Penryn. He will be speaking on planned lithium mining in Cornwall and whether it could support a more equitable shift to renewable energy, on both a local and global level.
