Join Arlington Tesla Takedown/Signs of Democracy for "Get the Flock out!" - National Week of Action Against ALPRs. (Automatic License Plate Readers)
We are taking our regular action on the road and meeting at the intersection of South Arlington Mill Drive and South Shirlington Road under the two Flock cameras on Sunday, August 16th from 10:30 -12 PM. Bring a protest sign related to ALPRs; we may also have extras to share. Bring a friend or two if you like. We also recommend bringing water and a chair or umbrella as the heat can be exhausting.
Flock cameras and other AI-mass surveillance cameras are all over our communities. These cameras, which are owned by a private company, are connected to a nationwide network which can be searched by undisclosed entities and agencies
- Without warrants
- Without oversight
- Without real accountability
We aim to raise awareness of these cameras and how they apply machine learning to capture and organize vehicles into categories based on: Make, Model, Color, Resident, non-Resident vehicle, Timestamp, Type of Plate, and Unique Identifiers like Vehicle Damage, Bumper Stickers. These are tools of a mass surveillance state that do not make people safer:
- There is no independent research proving ALPRs reduce crime.
- ALPRs put our undocumented or, even simply brown and Black, neighbors at risk. Police agencies frequently share ALPR data with ICE, even in states where it is legally prohibited.
- These ALPRs manufacturers have a history of poor security practices, like Flock logins for sale on Russian hacking forums.
