Hackney: Are child refugees Welcome?
Start: Wednesday, October 24, 2018• 6:00 PM
End: Wednesday, October 24, 2018• 8:00 PM
Come and see a series of short films about the welcome child migrants have received across the UK - from those who came to Hackney on the Kindertransport to Syrian children on the Isle of Bute, to young people who travelled unaccompanied across Europe and through the Calais ‘Jungle.’
The films speak to young migrants as well as those who know, or care for, them - teachers, lawyers, activists, therapists and youth workers.
The films will be followed by discussion with some of those featured in the films.
This year marks 80 years since British communities began to take in 10,000 child refugees fleeing Nazi persecution in Europe. These civic efforts with the support of the Government would come to be known as the ‘KinderTransport’. 80 years later, children are still fleeing war and still do not have a safe passage to the UK. This screening is in support of a petition to mark this important anniversary by
asking our Council to pledge to take in 10 unaccompanied child refugees a year over the next 10 years and as part of the national campaign led by Lord Alf Dubs who arrived in the UK as a child refugee on the Kindertransport.
Entrance is free but raffle tickets and contributions to refreshments are encouraged.
The films have been produced by award winning childmigrantstories.com and supported by the Humanities and Social Studies Collaboration Fund and the Campus Community Fund of Queen Mary University of London.
