How would you like Hawthorne to look and feel? This is the meeting to help make that a reality. The city is hosting a community workshop where residents can give feedback on a few new proposals for the city. At South Bay Forward, we're always excited when it gets safer for our families and neighbors to walk and bike in our beautiful slice of SoCal. This is a FAMILY FRIENDLY event, so you can bring your kids and plan to stay as long or as little as you'd like to leave feedback. A few folks who support housing and mobility can have a huge impact here.
What's happening Tuesday 8/25, open house from 6-8 PM
This is the next public meeting in the city's General Plan process. This one is a workshop (not a boring meeting!), so there will be maps and stations set up for feedback.
What to expect when you walk in
Walk in and move at your own pace. City staff will have the plan's early ideas laid out on boards and maps around the room. Add a comment, talk to staff, or just take it in. You can leave anytime. Kids are welcome to leave feedback as well. This is a city-sponsored event, so please RSVP to let us know how many South Bay Forward members are coming.
Background
What is a general plan? A General Plan shapes everything from where housing gets built to how streets are designed to how parks are prioritized. This feedback session is when residents can directly influence these decisions before they're locked in, which is a rare window to share the things you care about (wider sidewalks, protected bike lanes, more trees) while the plan is still being written.
The General Plan is the citywide document that decides what can get built where: housing, shops, parks, transit, sidewalks. Think of it as the rules every future project has to fit inside. Hawthorne's current plan was last comprehensively updated in 1990, and the city is rewriting it now. The choices made over the next year will shape our city for decades, and this is one of several chances to weigh in.
Take Hawthorne Plaza. The mall has been closed since 1999. Last September, a judge ordered the owner to redevelop or demolish by August 31, 2026. After 27 years of false starts, something is finally going to happen there. The General Plan shapes what can go there, and everywhere else in Hawthorne, for the next 20 years.
