Please join us on Thursday, October 15, at 6 PM, for Week 9 of our healthcare reading group. Over the course of the next several months, we will discuss passages that deal with subjects vital to our work as advocates for single-payer healthcare. By the end of the series, we hope to have a stronger understanding of the ideology, politics, and policy of the US healthcare system.
The list of readings has been chosen specifically so that you do not need any prior knowledge of healthcare policy to participate. You can jump in at any time over the course of the reading group, though we hope you will join early!
The theme of Week 9 is Single-Payer & Medicare For All. What is single-payer? What makes Medicare For All a true single-payer bill, distinct from the multitude of healthcare reform bills out there? How does single-payer compare to the status quo or to a public option?
Please read the following pieces and come to the meeting with your own questions and comments for our 1 1/2 hour facilitated conversation. Feel free to reach out to us ahead of time with any questions or suggestions.
1) Health Justice Now! (Single-payer excerpt), Tim Faust (2019)
2) M4A v ACA, PNHP (2013)
3) How Proposals for Public Health Care Plans Differ, The Century Foundation (2019)
4) Medicare Reform Comparison (2019)
5) We read 9 Democratic plans for expanding health care. Here's how they work. Kiff & Scott (2019)
