NOW IS THE TIME!
TELL STATE LEADERS TO REAFFIRM THEIR COMMITMENT TO PUBLIC HIGHER EDUCATION
Speak out and demonstrate your support for the funding bill that will truly help our students and our campuses: The Cherish Act S.741/H.1214
Massachusetts is underfunding its public colleges and universities by more than $500 million a year, according to a state commission that studied the issue. Because state investment in public higher education is down 31 percent from its peak in 2001, the cost has unfairly shifted to students and their families, placing a roadblock in front of many who seek to further their education. The lack of funding has also meant that public colleges and universities have turned to the exploitative practice of overusing adjunct faculty who are poorly paid and have limited — if any — access to benefits.
The MTA supports passage of the Cherish Act, which will phase in $580 million annually in new public higher education funding as well as freeze tuition and fees at current levels.
