It is becoming harder and harder for people across the UK to access legal advice for problems they face. The Government's ongoing hostile anti-immigrant policies leave many people in our communities reliant on legal aid to stay safe, but the legal aid system has been chronically under-funded and it is now almost impossible to access. Currently, 57% of asylum seekers in the UK cannot access a legal aid lawyer. We see and experience every day the problems this creates for individuals and their communities.
South London Refugee Association, Right to Remain and Migrants Organise are co-hosting an open community meeting on access to justice on 27 March, 10:00-14:00. The meeting will be led by the Hope and Justice Collective, a group of campaigners who are going through the immigration system and are taking action to improve access to legal aid for migrants.
This meeting is open to anyone concerned by not having access to quality legal advice for people going through the immigration system, and who wants to join others in speaking out. It will be an opportunity to:
- learn more about access to legal aid and ways to support yourself and those around you to navigate the immigration system when you can't get any legal advice
- ways to get your voice heard
- take collective action on this issue
The event will run from 10:00-14:00 including a hot lunch. Right to Remain will run a workshop on:
- How to use the Right to Remain Toolkit
- The difference between Legal Advice and Legal Support
