THE HOUSE OF THE PEOPLE IS HERE
Democracy is our national treasure, but it’s out of date. That’s why ordinary citizens are building a House of the People. This is a revolutionary institution to make the UK a proper democracy for the first time. Here’s how the House of the People works:
Citizens from all over the country are chosen by a Democracy Lottery, with fair weighting so there’s representation for everybody. This process is called sortition. Hundreds of people from all walks of life are selected, like a jury, to serve in the House of the People once. This is a service they’re doing for their country.
Meanwhile, thousands of people in local Assemblies - AKA open neighbourhood meetups - across the country create Community Charters. That’s a list of 5 key issues they agree need sorting. They take action on local issues, and pass the national matters to the House of the People.
In July 2025 the House of the People will debut as a DIY Parallel Parliament, held over three days in London. 50 people selected by the Lottery plus 50 people nominated by local Assemblies will work together to turn the Community Charters into a proper national mandate. That’s a National Charter of 5 key issues: a new course for the country. Then communities across the UK will take to the streets to push these changes through. The process begins again, every year.
What’s the big idea? For a House of the People to replace the House of Lords. Anyone in the UK can take part. It’s free and open to the public. It’s owned by everyone. It’s funded by your donations. It will fairly represent all corners and all groups in our society - but whisper that part, because the corporations that influence Parliament won’t like that.
The House of the People will sit for the first time in July 2025. Come to this call to find out more and sign up!
